What happened
Legionella bacteria confirmed in the building water system at Haven Plaza, an affordable apartment complex at 200 Avenue C in the East Village. Two residents were diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease within a 12-month span - one in June 2025 and the other in early May 2026 - triggering a NYC Health Department building evaluation and an order to remediate. No deaths have been reported. Tenants have publicly raised concerns about the pace of remediation and an extended loss of hot water. Figures are provisional.
