What happened
The NYC Health Department is investigating a likely community cluster of Legionnaires' disease in parts of Melrose and Morrisania in the South Bronx (ZIP codes 10451 and 10456); community outreach has been expanded to ZIP codes 10455 and 10459 after cases were identified within a few blocks of 10456. Seventeen people have tested positive and two have died; of the others, four are currently hospitalized, 10 have been discharged and one was not hospitalized. Cases have been identified since late August 2026. Cooling towers at 10 buildings in the affected ZIP codes screened PCR-positive for Legionella and have all been cleaned and disinfected; confirmatory culture testing is under way and takes up to two weeks. Those towers include Yankee Stadium (1 E. 161st St.), which the New York Yankees have said they do not believe is linked to the cluster, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln (234 E. 149th St.). No source has been confirmed. An in-person town hall was held September 15, 2026 and a virtual town hall is scheduled for September 22, 2026. Figures are provisional. This is a separate cluster from the Upper East Side cluster the Health Department concluded in August 2026.
