What happened
Two residents of Carnegie East House, a not-for-profit assisted-living residence for older adults at 1844 Second Avenue on Manhattan's Upper East Side, were diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease (the first identified in late August 2026), prompting an NYC Health Department evaluation of the building's hot water system. The department said both residents lived in the building during their incubation periods and, as of Sept. 8, 2026, Legionella had not yet been confirmed; it described the matter as an internal building hot-water-system investigation with no risk to the surrounding community. The facility had its hot water system disinfected, and both residents recovered.
