What happened
The NYC Health Department opened an investigation at The Cherokee, a 384-unit, four-building co-op complex between East 77th and 78th Streets from York Avenue to Cherokee Place on Manhattan's Upper East Side, after two residents were diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease within 12 months (investigation triggered Jan. 21, 2026). Department testing confirmed Legionella bacteria in the complex's shared plumbing system in February 2026, and building management engaged a water-safety company for remediation. No deaths have been reported.
