What happened

The New York State Department of Health, assisted by the Erie County Health Department, investigated two confirmed Legionnaires' disease cases in people who stayed at the same short-term vacation rental property in western New York and used its private hot tub; symptom onset was the first week of October 2024. Whole genome sequencing at the Wadsworth Center matched hot tub isolates to a patient's clinical isolate (two to three SNPs apart), confirming the hot tub as the source. After the owner did not initially comply with remediation recommendations, the state used a public nuisance law to compel disinfection; the commissioner's order closing the hot tub was lifted on March 31, 2025 after two successive rounds of sampling found no viable Legionella. CDC anonymized the exact property and municipality in its report.
