What happened
Oakland County and the Oakland County Health Division have an open Legionella investigation across the county government campus in Pontiac. A custodian who worked at the Sheriff's Administration building was diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease in November 2025, and Legionella was subsequently found in that building's water system in December 2025. Water testing was then expanded: Legionella was detected in four of eleven sampled locations in the County Courthouse (first- and third-floor men's restrooms and two cafeteria sinks), at two Children's Village buildings, and at additional county sites including the North Oakland Health Center and the Resource and Crisis Center. A second person, who does not work for the county, tested positive for Legionnaires' disease in April 2026 and listed the courthouse among the places visited during their exposure period; the Health Division has not confirmed that case was acquired there. The county closed and reopened affected buildings, installed point-of-use filters and flushed water systems, spending more than $640,000 on remediation. No deaths have been reported.
