What happened
The Vermont Department of Health is investigating a cluster of Legionnaires' disease cases among residents of Bardwell House, an affordable-housing complex in downtown Rutland, Vermont. The state began looking into the cluster in July 2026, and on August 19, 2026 the Rutland Herald reported that Legionella was confirmed in the building's water supply. The state epidemiologist cautioned that it is not confirmed the water system is how residents were infected. The health department has issued public health recommendations and the property management team is working with a water management consultant on remediation. The number of confirmed cases has not been released publicly.
