What happened

The Illinois Department of Public Health is investigating Legionnaires' disease at Luther Center, a 16-story assisted-living and independent-senior-housing building at 111 W. State Street in Rockford. IDPH opened an environmental investigation on September 2, 2026 after two residents were diagnosed; laboratory results returned September 11 cultured live Legionella from the 16th-floor penthouse hot water heater and the hot water return line that feeds the whole building, plus fixtures on the 3rd and 7th floors. An emergency order bars showers and mist-generating fixtures for assisted-living residents, tap water is banned from CPAP machines and humidifiers building-wide, and bottled water is being supplied. Figures are provisional.
