What happened

The Evanston Health and Human Services Department, working with the Illinois Department of Public Health, has linked two confirmed cases of Legionnaires' disease to the Hilton Garden Inn North Shore/Evanston at 1818 Maple Ave. Both people reported using the pool and hot tub areas in August 2026. No deaths have been reported. IDPH sampled the hotel's water on September 8, 2026 and has since confirmed Legionella bacteria in the hot tub's water system; samples from other areas of the hotel did not detect Legionella. The pool and hot tub have been closed since September 2, 2026 and the spa will stay closed until remediation is complete. Figures are provisional.
