Pritzker Hageman (Hospital water system)
What happened
Legionella bacteria was found in the water system of St. Joseph's University Medical Center in Paterson, NJ. New Jersey health officials have linked two Legionella infections to the hospital and both patients have died; the second death was confirmed December 24, 2025. The two patients were treated at the hospital months apart, in July and early November 2025. State testing detected Legionella in the water supply of a contained area of the hospital on November 18, 2025; the hospital was notified December 8 and began cleaning and treating its water system. At least 228 former patients discharged from that area between November 27 and December 8, 2025 were notified of possible exposure. The hospital says its most recent testing shows the water is safe. Figures are provisional.
