What happened
The Georgia Department of Public Health confirms it has had an open Legionnaires' disease investigation at Wilcox State Prison in Abbeville since December 2023, opened following reports of illness, and the investigation was still active as of September 2026. DPH says the work involves identifying the Legionella source, multiple rounds of water sampling and testing, remediation and a water management plan. DPH has not released case or death counts for this facility, so no count is published here. Figures are provisional.
